One cat steals the other’s food: is a microchip feeder the answer?

The important question is not when dinner arrives. It is whether the right cat can eat it without the other taking over.

If one cat grazes and the other steals unattended food, shortlist a microchip-controlled bowl such as the SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder. If separate meals already fit your day comfortably, electronic access control may add little. Its strongest use case is reducing the repeated need to guard one cat’s bowl.

Why a normal automatic feeder can miss the problem
A timed dispenser can manage a schedule, but an open bowl still leaves access unresolved. Buying two timed feeders does not, by itself, identify which cat is eating from each one. Decide whether you need scheduled portions, restricted access, or both before comparing models.
What the SureFeed actually does
Sure Petcare says the lid opens for a registered microchip or compatible RFID collar tag. It supports wet and dry food, has a 400 ml bowl and uses four C batteries. Its manual describes a gradual training process. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from our own testing. Manufacturer source.
This is a covered bowl that you fill, not a hopper that dispenses fresh portions on a schedule. Do not buy it expecting both functions.
The standard SureFeed, at a glance
Overall: 32 cm deep × 23 cm wide × 20 cm high. Eating opening: 21 cm wide × 15.5 cm high. Bowl: 400 ml. The official Italian page does not publish an item weight.
Stores up to 32 pet identities, retains them when batteries are removed, and accepts compatible implanted chips or a SureFlap RFID collar tag. Four C batteries power it; a low-battery light prompts replacement.
The maker estimates six months of battery life, not a guarantee. It includes gradual training, a closing lid, a single bowl, divided bowl, mat and one tag. There is no portion-dispensing hopper. Official features and dimensions .
The bowl, mat and removable lid need regular cleaning; the main unit must not be submerged. Follow the supplied manual’s hand-washing instructions for the supplied parts. A sealed lid is not refrigeration. Care and setup manual.
Match the setup to the household
- A grazer needs protected access: the standard microchip model is a relevant starting point.
- Both cats finish supervised meals: separate rooms and ordinary bowls may solve the problem without an electronic feeder.
- You need unattended portion dispensing: check for that exact function separately. Identity control and dispensing are different requirements.
When connected features add useful work—and when they remove it
Selective access addresses food stealing. A connected feeder addresses a further question: do you need a record of eating patterns? Before choosing one, identify the decision you would make with that information. If you only need a lid to recognise a cat, an app introduces setup without necessarily easing mealtimes.
Less guarding, but allow time for training
A buyer with three cats on different foods reported that they eventually ate independently, after about a month of adjustment. Another described weeks of gradual training for a nervous cat. For a household currently supervising every bowl, that suggests a useful exchange: more attention during setup, potentially less intervention later.

A critical detail comes from an owner whose second cat learned to eat alongside the authorised cat while the lid was open. They still found it helpful, but it did not eliminate stealing. Checks before ordering in Europe
Check your cat’s chip number with the manufacturer, the opening dimensions, available floor space and regional support. Ask how the design handles another cat approaching while the authorised cat is already eating. We have not verified resistance to determined food stealing in an independent comparison.
The base model’s battery operation avoids a mains-plug mismatch. Accessories and connected variants require their own checks.
